I have been following the various posts for Xbox Live status for a while and the latest from Major Nelson’s Twitter and the Xbox Live support homepage says things are back up and running. However, I am down here in Florida and still cannot recover a gamer tag from XBL - keeps saying the Xbox Live sign-up is unavailable. When you don’t have a working gamer tag you pretty much can’t do anything.
So, for me this is really annoying. The thing that irks me the most is they are saying the service is up and running when it is clearly not. Check out this forum thread - tons of people having issues recovering gamer tags. Over 1200 posts since Thursday and counting. I am looking for a refund of some kind for sure in the near future…
Update: Looks like Engadget noticed the problem and Major’s twitter is in a flurry with updates on the situation. Sounds like the Xbox Live team is having big time issues. At least the gamer tag issue is now listed on the main status page. I hope they sold tons of 360s at least…
Update 2: Gamer tag recovery is working a bit better today (12/30) - I just recovered without incident this morning. I can’t really comment on everything else on XBL though…

Well I can’t say that those of us with intact gamertags are faring much better. COD4 in particular is nigh impossible to connect with and if you’re trying to connect in a party with friends you can all but forget it. My brother and I played the game together but on separate teams for the first time ever because that was the only way we could actually get into a room together. One finds a match, invites the other and we roll the dice for matchmaking. Sometimes we’re on the same team, sometimes not. Some more often than either of those outcomes the game freezes or the lobby closes. Other than their scheduled down time, this is the only major outage I’ve ever experienced on Live. And even though it would be really nice to play right now, over the weekend, with my brother staying over, with his xbox, I’m not as irate as some of those commenters on Engadget or the forums. That said, I would like to see everything up and running for real soon. kthnx.

Yeah - I have found some other stuff to do as well, so I am not all that upset either. Actually got back into World of Warcraft but that is another story entirely. Anyway, this is really a first for me too - I never anticipated anything like this over the holiday. XBL never had these issues with Halo 2 launch, 360 launch, last holiday or even Halo 3. Wonder if they will ever tell us what happened… probably not…
