Bought a PS3

PS3 80GB BundleYes, you read that right - I bought a PS3.  The purchase however was a direct result of the HD format wars though - at least that is my excuse.  I have been a die hard Xbox 360 fan-boy since launch and have hated on the PS3 quite a bit in the past.  After watching HD DVDs for a while on my 360 I craved for more movies from Netflix in HD - problem is some of them are only on Blu Ray and some are only on HD DVD.  Therein lies the problem - I want all movies possible in HD now and needed a Blu Ray player to make that happen.  However the cheapest one is about 280 bucks right now…

Enter the PS3 - if you really want a Blu Ray player it is a good deal.  On the other hand if you don’t want a Blu Ray player - it may not be such a good deal - especially if you have an Xbox 360 already.  I happen to fall in the former category though.  I looked for a while for deals on the 60 gig model but couldn’t find a good deal on eBay without totally foregoing the warranty.  Then comes this sweet deal on Amazon.  You get Eye of Judgement (with the camera) and Oblivion with the 80 gig motorstorm bundle PS3 for 514.97 - free shipping and no tax.  Pretty good deal - so I jumped on it.  Only thing is that I already have the 360 and PC versions of Oblivion, but hey, why not have it on every system?  I also had to get an HDMI switch but I was considering buying one anyway as my set of HDMI devices has been growing lately.

So it will come in a few days and I will slowly depart from my old stance as a PS3 hater.  Hopefully this will help be give some objective views on PS3 news on Nermit though - so I see this as a good opportunity as new games, firmware and Playstation Home become available.  More to come after I get the PS3 on Wednesday…

Well I definitely was considering the same drastic measure not too long ago. I decided to just go with what few import HD-DVDs I could find that in the US are only released on Blu-ray, mostly from Xploited Cinema (sorry for the ugly link) (http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/hd-dvds-c-35.html?osCsid=f31d8f950b31a1a3c38f79395fc23eac). That plus not having any legacy games and not wanting to give Sony money all led up to me not getting a PS3, but if you’re gonna get one and its not the 60GB, it seems like the one you got would be the package to have. Do you know anyone with a standalone Blu-Ray player?

I don’t give much credence to CSR opinions that the PS3 player is not as good as standalones (similar complaints have come out about the 360’s HD-DVD drive), but I would be interested to hear from someone who has had a chance to see both in the wild

I don’t know anyone with a standalone Blu Ray player - they are just too expensive I think. I have heard a lot about the PS3 actually being one of the better Blu Ray players which is why I ended up going in that direction. The cheap Blu Ray players are not good at all based on some reviews I have read. I will see if I can dig up anything real comparisons. I found a good comparison about the Xbox 360 DVD player versus the A2 from Toshiba and they found the quality to be very similar.

…And until just now, I didn’t know anyone with a PS3. You will all be jealous of my hybrid HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player that I buy for $200 next year. In the meantime, I will be jealous of your HD movies.
